April Fool's, One Prank One For Keeps

As I recently posted, March was a barren month for cakes so I had resolved to do better in April and what better than to start out with an April Fool's cake?  We were headed to the Crawfute's (Angie Crawford and Charles Stute's) for dinner and I had volunteered to bring dessert.  I had told Charles I would bring a huckleberry cheesecake.  I want to get some practice in for a wedding cake I will be making this fall so this would be the perfect opportunity.  On Friday, April 1 I told him I had run out of time and would be bringing brownies instead.......
Surprise!  April Fool's........
As the evening progressed the conversation moved towards summer plans when Charles said, "we might need a cake".  When someone says that to me it only means one thing!  WHAT??  You're getting married???  Angie's response?  Were not getting married....WHAT??  you ARE married???  When did this happen?? Wait, it's April Fool's Day are you joking?  This is a prank right?  Nope.  It happened,  March 14, 2016 in Hailey Idaho.  It was a very good thing I did make a huckleberry cheesecake.  We all celebrated with champagne, cake and hugs.  I can't think of a better April 1 or be more happy for a couple I adore!
These two helped me put the final touch on the cake, huckleberry sauce.

Impromptu bachelorette party!

Got to get a closer look and sniff?

  1. A terrific night with wonderful friends. The brown e's were great!
And the cheesecake is marvelous. I'm having a little bit of leftover right now...and I might be licking the plate.

The vision for this cake creation has been in my thoughts for about three months.  In July we spent a week on the Oregon coast with our dear friends including their soon to be two year old adorable boy.  He was all about the fish.  Fish in the ocean, fish at the aquarium, fish in the souvenir shops, fishy, fishy fishy.  The cake was vanilla with my stand-by favorite buttercream frosting.  All of the embellishments were edible, that is if you like sugar candy!  Super fun cake to make and share.  The two year old's comment? "Whoa...."  "Fishy"

I wish when I had turned 21 I was as composed as the young young lady is!       In Boise on Spring Break from Cal Poly she came to celebrate with her elders.  Not only is she beautiful but she's smart!  One of three students a warded the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) in STEM Undergraduate Research Scholarship for Summer 2018.    It was a true honor to create this cake for her to celebrate her coming of age party.   Happy Birthday Miranda!!

This cake was a challenge.  I typically make my cakes the day OF the party.  I know they will be fresh, the decorations will be "just so" and if they aren't I can tweak them at the party.....not the case with this one.  I would not be there AND it had to be done a day and a half before the event.....the pressure!  This is exactly why I don't sell cakes for money, though I heard this one was a success even disguised as a gluten free chocolate delight!
