Sprinkles

Just HOW does one cover an entire cake in sprinkles without getting them everywhere ??  True, there are cake gadgets that allow you to tilt the cake at a severe angle while decorating it but I am not a gadget person so I don't own one of those.  I have also read about elaborate preparations of partially freezing the cake so it is easier to handle while turning it on it's side to roll the desired section through the sprinkles but that sounds like a COMPLETE disaster waiting to happen.  Finally after reading through quite a few solutions I found one that worked like a charm!  You simply spray a strip of wax paper with non-stick cooking spray (I used coconut oil), sprinkle your sprinkles onto that and then use the wax paper as a transfer sheet, pressing it lightly into the side of the cake.  The sprinkles release from the wax paper onto the frosted cake.  It was easy and resulted in very few sprinkles in places I didn't want them.  (Credit goes to an...

Baby Cakes

Part of my excuse for not posting is due to Bosworth House Rule #1.  The oven does not come on when it is extremely hot outside.  By "extremely hot" I think we mean over 80.....regardless , with July temperatures over 100 for many days in a row I have to admit I don't feel much like turning on the oven let alone baking all day long.  HOWEVER when one goes to Michigan to another one's kitchen and it is a high of 70 all rules are off, though this household recently adopted Bosworth House Rule #2, no glitter, better characterized as "a glitter free zone".  So perhaps if it had been 90 degrees with 80% humidity I would have introduced another house rule to Chez Bremer.  This sweet little cake was made for a co-workers baby shower.  She had twins, she deserved cake!

Statute of Limitations....?

Does something exist like this for a published recipe?  I hope not and if it does then I hope someone out there policing such things does not call me out.  When I first began this blog someone asked me if I planned to post recipes .  I had to think about that for awhile but ultimately I decided no, I wouldn't post actual recipes.  If you are determined enough (and know me well enough) I will share any recipe with you,  should you simply ask. {{WARNING:  Side tangent}}  In fact I will offer to bake a cake with (or for) you.  Dang!! I wish I had photos from every cake I have ever created.  Some years ago, an acquaintance wanted a special cake for a friend of hers whom I didn't know and was celebrating a landmark birthday.  The acquaintance was referred to me as someone who might be able to help.  Long story short, the acquaintance showed up at my house at 8:30 am with her three year old child to bake an extraordinary birthday cake. ...

Where Does Time Go?

I mean this in two senses, again because it has been many months since I have updated this blog....Where Does Time Go?  and this May my husband and I celebrated our 25 year wedding anniversary, WHERE DOES TIME GO??  Both events seem as if they were just days ago.  I was getting married days ago  and  I was updating my blog just days ago.  Ok, maybe not days for the former but it truly does not seem as if 25 years have passed since we first wed.  I can only hope for another 25.  Some pictures from our celebration past and present: Us, cutting our cake 25 years ago.... This was a re-creation of the cake we made for our wedding , down to the very obstinate frosting.  I will never make that frosting again.  I have learned quite a bit in 25 years  We thought it was pretty good then and now

Far Too Long (I am not referring to the number of years on this earth!)

Wow, I can hardly believe it has been three months since I have blogged and more than that since I have actually blogged about a cake!  Well this one is for the record books, not because it was such a spectacular cake but because the event was beyond that.  I am lucky enough to be part of a wonderful group of women who refer to themselves as The Vixens .   Together, we love, we share, we celebrate, we cry and we love some more.  We are together through the tough and rough times and yes through the BEST times.  This post is about one of those best of times, we celebrated a landmark birthday for one of the Vixens.  It was a surprise birthday party for Denise C.   She is one of the most giving, loving, caring individuals I have yet to meet therefore it was more than an honor to celebrate her, and to bake her requested Boston Creme Pie, which isn't pie at all but a cake.   It was a glorious night!   The Vixens Vixens -In - Training ...

Christmas Crack(ers)

December is not the time for cakes as there are too many other things going on, but that doesn't mean there isn't time for baking.  I grew up helping my mother bake all sorts of things, including 12 dozen cookies of one type for a Christmas cookie exchange with her girlfriends.  We would make these very time intensive sandwich cookies called cream wafers.  The dough was delicate, rolled into a sheet and cut into small circles which were baked and then filled with a cream cheese frosting.  I have made these cookies as an adult but honestly they are too fussy for this time of year or for any other time of year for that matter.  As part of the exchange, the recipe for your cookie was also shared.  The following recipe is one of the of the ones we would receive in exchange for our labor intensive effort. This is so easy it is ridiculous and so tasty you too will be addicted.  It has become my hands down go-to cookie for the holiday season and I think of m...
