Far Too Long (I am not referring to the number of years on this earth!)

Wow, I can hardly believe it has been three months since I have blogged and more than that since I have actually blogged about a cake!  Well this one is for the record books, not because it was such a spectacular cake but because the event was beyond that.  I am lucky enough to be part of a wonderful group of women who refer to themselves as The Vixens.  Together, we love, we share, we celebrate, we cry and we love some more.  We are together through the tough and rough times and yes through the BEST times.  This post is about one of those best of times, we celebrated a landmark birthday for one of the Vixens.  It was a surprise birthday party for Denise C.   She is one of the most giving, loving, caring individuals I have yet to meet therefore it was more than an honor to celebrate her, and to bake her requested Boston Creme Pie, which isn't pie at all but a cake.   It was a glorious night!

Happy Birthday Denise!

Yes! It was that good!

History Lesson:  It is likely Boston Cream Pie acquired its name when cakes and pies were cooked in the same pans, and the words were used interchangeably. In the latter part of the 19th century, this type of cake was variously called a "cream pie", a "chocolate cream pie", or a "custard cake".

The vision for this cake creation has been in my thoughts for about three months.  In July we spent a week on the Oregon coast with our dear friends including their soon to be two year old adorable boy.  He was all about the fish.  Fish in the ocean, fish at the aquarium, fish in the souvenir shops, fishy, fishy fishy.  The cake was vanilla with my stand-by favorite buttercream frosting.  All of the embellishments were edible, that is if you like sugar candy!  Super fun cake to make and share.  The two year old's comment? "Whoa...."  "Fishy"

I wish when I had turned 21 I was as composed as the young young lady is!       In Boise on Spring Break from Cal Poly she came to celebrate with her elders.  Not only is she beautiful but she's smart!  One of three students a warded the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) in STEM Undergraduate Research Scholarship for Summer 2018.    It was a true honor to create this cake for her to celebrate her coming of age party.   Happy Birthday Miranda!!

From Miss to Mrs.

This cake was a challenge.  I typically make my cakes the day OF the party.  I know they will be fresh, the decorations will be "just so" and if they aren't I can tweak them at the party.....not the case with this one.  I would not be there AND it had to be done a day and a half before the event.....the pressure!  This is exactly why I don't sell cakes for money, though I heard this one was a success even disguised as a gluten free chocolate delight!
